The Hindu Business Line : `Cost-effective storage system, key to e-governance'

BE it the census process or storage of electoral rolls by the Election Commission of India or the Department of Company Affairs, their large operations and administrative processes have been streamlined through e-governance. You could call it paperless environment or less paper administration.

Canon, the $30 billion global major, Adobe Systems Inc, network publishing and content management services provider and StorageTek Technology Corporation, a $2.2-billion storage solutions provider, hosted an interactive session to showcase their strengths.

The Business Development Manager, Adobe Systems India, Mr S. Angiah, speaking at "Simplifying eGovernance" said that the country's electoral data had been stored by the Election Commission of India in a PDF (portable document format) and this had simplified the administrative process of the commission by providing swift retrieval.

Likewise, the Department of Company Affairs has taken to electronic administration, wherein companies can register and manage all their interaction with the Government electronically. He said that these were two of the largest e-governance projects anywhere in the world.

The General Manager of StorageTek India, Mr Vijay Pradhan, said that e-governance projects involved large data storage applications and retrieval systems. The challenge was to have a system that can store and retrieve information in a cost-effective manner.

The Assistant Director of Marketing, Canon India, Mr Lakshmi Narayana Rao, said e-governance had been projected as an enabler for good governance. Often governments are faced with the challenge of converting large volumes of information stored in papers or as legacy data into electronic format. The Additional Secretary, IT, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Mr P. Raghuveer, said that Andhra Pradesh the State Government is a poineering state in the country to take to e-governance. Thechallenge was to convert illiterates into e-literates, where people can use computers for their requirements as demonstrated by e-Choupals.

The Director of IT, Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, Government of India, Mr J. Jayakumar, said "in one of the largest e-governance projects in the country, we are in the process of streamlining the administrative process for the benefit of citizens in the country."
