Environment CII workshop in Kochi on hazardous waste Our Bureau
Kochi , Sept. 15 CII-Kerala has initiated efforts to bring together industry, NGO, environmental activists, local communities, the Pollution Control Board and the Government to form a charter for synergising industry and environment. In association with the Local Area Environment Committee (Edayar and Eloor), constituted under the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee, it is organising a participatory workshop on Friday at Hotel Renaissance with the objective of creating a doctrine of partnership between the parties and to involve and work together in monitoring, preventing and minimising hazardous waste generation. The workshop will also aim to bring out a blueprint, which will be the base paper to march ahead in seeking the support of the multilateral agencies like the UNEP in re-mediating the contaminated sites. It is necessary to have a participatory approach involving all stakeholders in creating a roadmap for minimising the generation of hazardous waste, its proper handing and disposal with a view to safeguarding the environment. An expert panel comprising Dr R. Gopichandran, Scientist and Co-ordinator, Industry Initiatives, Centre for Environment Education, Ahmedabad, Mr K.V. Indulal, Member-Secretary, Kerala PCB, Mr K. Chandran Pillai, MP and CITU leader, and Prof M.K. Prasad, Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, will moderate with the participating groups.
