AP will formulate separate Seed Act, says Minister

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Sept. 15

THE Andhra Pradesh Government has termed the existing Seed Act as anti-farmer. "It is very weak," said Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, Minister for Agriculture.

Speaking to newspersons on Tuesday, he said that the State would come out with its own Act soon. "The draft is ready. It will be circulated to gather public opinion on the draft. Also, we will send it for Central approval."

The Minister said the Government had seized spurious seeds worth Rs 7.5 crore in the last couple of months in various parts of the State.

Referring to the actions taken by the State Government to keep tabs on sub-standard pesticides, the Minister said the State had clamped a two-month interim ban on two products - Dicofol 18.5 EC (batch no 291) and Monocrotophos 36 per cent SL (batch no 003), manufactured by Hyderabad Chemicals Supplies Ltd and Ratna Agro Chemicals respectively.

"They can approach the Central Insecticides Laboratory at Faridabad whose findings are binding on both parties," he said.
