Sparse rains, evenly spread

RAINFALL has been sparse but spatially distributed in Kerala during the four days ended September 19.

Rain occurred at many places in the State on September 16 and at a few places on September 17, 18 and 19, according to the Agromet Bulletin dated September 20 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram.

Chief amounts of rainfall in cm are:

Sept 16: Alappuzha - 5; Kochi Airport, Mancompu and Thiruvananthapuram City - 4 each; Kottayam and Kumarakom - 3 each; Mavelikara, Cherthala, Haripad, Thiruvalla, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram Airport and Varkala - 2 each; and Nilambur, Chittur, Aluva, Piravom, Perumbavur, Punalur and Neyyattinkara - 1 each.

Sept 17: Kochi Airport and Kumarakom - 3 each; and Piravom and Kannara - 1 each.

Sept 18: Munnar - 8; Manjeri and Thiruvananthapuram City - 3 each; Varkala, Kollam, Kunnamkulam, Alappuzha and Mavelikara - 1 each.

Sept 19: Thrissur - 4; Punalur - 2; Cherthala and Kollam - 1 each.

Mean relative humidity varied between 67 per cent and 90 per cent in various districts; mean cloud coverage between 5 okta and 8 okta and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 8 kmph.

Forecast valid up to September 22 spoke about the possibility of rain at a few places in all districts. Outlook for the two subsequent days did not indicate any significant change.

Stage and state of crops: Harvesting of the `Virippu' crop and sowing and transplanting of the `Mundakan' crop are in progress in paddy. Weeding and application of fertiliser and green manure continue in coconut and arecanut. Top dressing operations are apace in ginger and turmeric.

Farm advisory: Paddy fields should be drained 10 days prior to harvest in the `Virippu' crop. In pepper gardens, spraying of one per cent Bordeaux mixture is recommended to control wilt and `pollu' diseases.
