Mariculture for fishermen suggested

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Sept. 24

IDENTIFICATION of certain areas in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve to enable fishermen take up mariculture, has been recommended to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Head of the Fisheries Environment Management Division at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi, Mr M. Rajagopalan, has said.

Speaking at Mandapam, near Rameswaram, after inaugurating a five-day training programme on post-harvest and value-added techniques in seaweeds, he said the seaweed wealth in India is estimated at 2.6 million tonnes.

However, the country has been producing around 500-600 tonnes of agar and 900-1,100 tonnes of sodium alginate.

Mr N. Kaliaperumal, the scientist-in-charge, Regional Centre of CMFRI at Mandapam, said that the shallow stretch of water from Rameswaram to Kanyakumari has been found to be suitable for seaweed cultivation in a massive way.

A suggestion to rename the seaweed as sea vegetable to make the public come to know of the importance of seaweed cultivation was made at the training programme, the sources added.
