Cotton Corpn to set up 55 purchasing centres in AP

Hyderabad , Sept. 24

THE Cotton Corporation of India would be establishing 55 cotton purchasing centres in Andhra Pradesh this year following the State Government's estimates that the production would be 15 per cent higher than last year.

The State Government had requested the corporation to step up its purchasing centres as the area under cotton this year had increased to 11.30 lakh hectares from 8.37 lakh hectares last year. On account of the increase in area, the Government was expecting heavy arrivals in the various market yards in the State.

According to an official press release here on Friday, the corporation has agreed to set up cotton purchasing centres in the districts of Guntur, Khammam, Adilabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Prakasam, Krishna, Nalgonda, Cuddapah and Kurnool.

In order to cope with the increased production of cotton, the State Marketing Secretary, Mr N. Ramesh Kumar, Commissioner, Mr D.S. Murthy, and Director of Marketing, Mr M.T. Krishna Babu, had held detailed discussions on Thursday with the Cotton Corporation of India on the strategy to be adopted. They had also held a video conference with the District Collectors, Joint Collectors and officials of marketing, Food Corporation of India, MARKFED and Civil Supplies and alerted them on the steps to be taken, which included giving wide publicity and maintaining the quality of cotton brought to the market yards by farmers.

The press release stated that the Joint Collectors and marketing officials were also instructed to be ready for procurement of maize.
