Farm credit Kerala CM's plea to bankers Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, has requested commercial banks in the State to adopt a thoughtful approach towards farmers struggling to service their loans. An official quoted the Chief Minister telling a meeting of the State-Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) to appreciate the predicament of farmers ravaged by a series of crises from early last year. Farmers in the State have been only too well known for their excellent loan servicing history during normal times, the Chief Minister added. He also mentioned about the spate of complaints with regard to rejection of education loan proposals coming in from all over the State. This was another issue that called for deft handling by the bankers. Mr Chandy also demanded a cut in prevailing interest rates. Bank branches in rural areas should ideally implement one developmental project every year in the area serviced by the branch, the Chief Minister added. Mr R.V. Shastri, Chairman and Managing Director, Canara Bank, presided over the meeting.
