Act on contract farming soon

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Sept. 30

AN Act providing for contract farming is in the offing, according to Mr R. Rajagopal, Special Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Tamil Nadu.

He was speaking at a National Seminar on contract farming at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. About 150 farmers from various parts of the State converged to put forth their suggestions.

While the proposed Act would be on the lines of the "model legislation" by the Centre, the discussion was aimed at eliciting response from the stakeholders, namely farmers and industries on the difficulties that they encountered.

Among others, he envisaged an amendment to the Marketing Act, as also on modification of the draft contract agreement. "We need to have an arbitrating mechanism," he said in reply to a question.
