Haryana wants Nabard fund for all irrigation projects

Rajesh Ahuja

Chandigarh , Sept. 30

THE Chief Minister of Haryana, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, has urged the Central Government not to restrict the scope of financing irrigation schemes under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) and Nabard. The Chief Minister has sought Nabard finance for all irrigation projects, as in the past.

In a demi-official letter addressed to the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, the Chief Minister reminded the announcement made during the Budget speech regarding the revival of RIDF for water management and other programmes. The Chief Minister said that as accelerated water management schemes were a high priority area, Nabard should be asked to finance all irrigation projects.

Mr Chautala asserted that Haryana, which had a sharp focus on agricultural production and water management as well as conservation, had been seeking assistance from Nabard for implementation of its projects.

Out of 531 schemes sanctioned under assistance from Nabard , 464 irrigation and drainage schemes had already been completed. These schemes had helped in increasing agricultural production and ensuring better water management in the State.

He also drew the attention of the Finance Minister towards the problems being faced by the people of the State due to the "deficit in water resources.'' He claimed that numerous efforts were being made to conserve water and make its optimum utilisation for increased agricultural production and meet drinking water needs.
