SriLankan Cargo launches e-filing of manifests

New Delhi , Oct. 6

CUSTOMERS of SriLankan Cargo, the cargo arm of SriLankan airline, can now save up to 80 per cent of the costs incurred on advance filing of cargo manifests on account of the newly launched electronic House Air Way Bill, or e-HAWB, on its Web-based logistics system, SriLankan SkyChain.

In a statement, the airline has said that the new component of e-HAWB added to the SkyChain allows registered customers to further reduce the costs incurred. While the industry norm worldwide for submitting a manual HAWB is about $10, by using e-HAWB, registered customers of SkyChain will only pay a nominal charge. Registration is free, and access is both convenient and cost effective as the system is Internet-based, the statement explains.

"In a security conscious environment, we as cargo carriers need to facilitate the provision of information in a timely manner which will enable continuous and free flow of goods," the airline statement said.

The electronic transmission of the HAWB and MAWB (Master Air Way Bill) details are mandatory for shipments to the US, and are required by the US Bureau of Customs and Border Protection at least four hours before the arrival of a shipment. Using e-HAWB, Srilankan SkyCargo quickly transmits full and correct shipment details, facilitating clarifications if required prior to arrival, and helps customers with hassle-free and faster clearance, the statement has pointed out.

The new system, recommended by International Air Transport Association (IATA), is of particular significance to forwarders and shippers who do not have easy access to the required Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) messaging system or find the costs of data conversion prohibitive.

The statement adds that now every time a customer, be it a forwarder, agent or shipper, issues an HAWB, they can enter its details directly into SkyChain using the e-HAWB option, ensuring automatic conversion to an EDI format, data accuracy, better control and speedy processing at destination.

The e-HAWB is a secure data bank that ensures complete confidentiality, a click of the mouse providing customers a list of only their shipments forwarded to SriLankan Cargo, the statement said.
