DD gets tough with pvt channels on Olympic footage

New Delhi , Oct. 12

Prasar Bharati has decided to bill news channels and other broadcasters for using the Olympic footage for more than the time permitted.

Other channels cannot use the Olympics footage for more than two minutes and the duration of one particular event should not exceed 30 seconds. The national broadcaster held the rights to the recently concluded Athens Olympic Games.

According to Mr K.S. Sarma, CEO, Prasar Bharati, "We have already sent out a bill to channels and if they refuse to pay up we will not hesitate in taking legal action." He is supported by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) whose Senior Legal Officer, Mr Fernand Alberto, said, "The ABU had acquired the rights to the Olympics, which was given to DD. If legal action is taken, we will assist Prasar Bharati."
