Hyderabad , Oct. 13

THE former Panchayat Raj Minister of Karnataka, Mr M.Y. Ghorpade, was awarded the first Mamidi Bhoj Reddy Award, instituted by Lok Satta and Foundation for Democratic Reforms, here on Wednesday.

Mr Ghorpade, Minister for Panchayat Raj during 1992-94 and again in 1999-2004, was instrumental in enacting the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act 1993, which facilitated the devolution of powers to local bodies.

He received the award from Dr . Jayaprakash Narayan, the National Coordinator of Lok Satta, at a function.

The Foundation for Democratic Reforms and Lok Satta instituted the award to promote local Government empowerment and recognise individuals or institutions, which have strived for this cause.

The late Mr Mamidi Bhoj Reddy was the Zilla Parishad Chairman of Hyderabad district during 1962-76.

The two NGOs also created the E.V. Ram Reddi Endowment for civil society to promote democratic values, governance reforms, active citizenship and people's empowerment.

Mr Digvijay Singh delivered an endowment lecture on administrative reforms and enhancing public service delivery systems.
