Air freight sop for cardamom exporters

Our Burea

Kochi , Oct. 15

IN a bid to boost the exports of cardamom during Ramzan, the Spices Board has decided to grant airfreight assistance to exporters.

The assistance at the rate of Rs 30 a kg would be available from October 16 to November 30 for small cardamom of grades AGEB and AGB exported by air to West Asian destinations, Mr S. Kannan, Director (Marketing) of Spices Board, told Business Line.

The demand was made by exporters at a meeting held at Bodinayakannur on October 12, he said.

The peak time for import of cardamom by the oil rich Arab countries is the Ramazan month and hence, the Board has extended this facility now, he said.

The major market for Indian cardamom is the Gulf and Saudi Arabia tops in the region. Exports to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman in 2000-01 stood at 613.16 tonnes and this had fell in subsequent years and it was 383.68 tonnes in 2003-04.

The idea of providing airfreight assistance to the exporters was to enable them to maintain our share besides expanding it further by offering the produce at competitive prices, he said.

Guatemala had been offering prices lower than that of India in the Gulf market, he said.

This assistance would be available for export of cardamom bought from auctions in Tamil Nadu and Kerala between October 16 and November 30, he added.

Exporters were required to inform the Board about the anticipated quantity of cardamom (small) that would be exported before November 30 for availing of the assistance, he said.
