Bangalore , Oct. 19

BY 2020, India will have 47 million employable people, while the US will be short of 17 million workers, Europe short by three million people and even China by five million people. This, if handled well, is a great opportunity for us, according to Mr Som Mittal, President and CEO, HP GlobalSoft India.

Setting the agenda in his keynote address for an international HR conference on `Emerging Asia' here on Tuesday, Mr Mittal said it is the resilience of the Asian people that has made the region a large growing economy and a large market.

Inaugurating the conference, Mr P.G.R. Scindhia, Karnataka Minister for Industries and Infrastructure, said that the Indian socio-economic situation does not yet support practices such as contract and part-time labour. "There should be job security for the older workers," he felt.

He also urged the private sector to consider adequate representation from women, physically challenged and the backward communities when they employed people.

Explaining the reasons for the lack of infrastructure in cities today, he said it was due to the large exodus of people from the rural to the urban regions in the country. "When the US can outsource their work from us, why can't we outsource work from the urban to the rural areas?" he asked.

He hoped that the conference would come out with HR strategies and suggestions for the Government.

On the occasion, the Minister released a `Code of conduct' drawn up by the National HRD Network, for HR practitioners in the country.

The Network also felicitated Mr K.V. Kamath, CEO, ICICI Bank, with the Pathfinder CEO Award for the year 2004.

The conference, which has attracted about 700 delegates from across the continent, will discuss issues such as `How to become world class companies,' `Asian success stories,' and `Cross-cultural partnerships,' in the next three days.
