Foreign Trade Israel for bilateral ties in IT, biotech fields Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 21 IN order to strengthen the bilateral ties between India and Israel, the two countries could collaborate in the fields of information technology and biotechnology. This was stated by the Israeli Vice-Prime Minister, Mr Ehud Olmert, when the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) delegation of IT and biotechnology called on him in Tel Aviv on Wednesday. Mr Olmert emphasised that India and Israel should not look at each other as competitors, but as collaborators. "There is no exclusivity of knowledge and hence there should be open knowledge sharing between India and Israel," he said. Leader of the CII's IT delegation, Mr Vinay Deshpande, CEO of Encore Software, said that Indian companies would explore opportunities for collaborations and joint ventures in key areas and serve international markets. He added that India was rising fast in the value chain on hardware technology and had patented numerous IT products. At a biotech conference, Dr B.M. Gandhi, Advisor, Department of Biotechnology, spoke about the advances in the Indian biotech sector and pointed out India's capability in the field of research, capacity building and regulatory framework. He said that the Government of Israel and India were in the process of working out the details of signing an MoU for cooperation in research and development between the two countries. Dr M. Vidyasagar, Executive Vice-President, Advanced Technology, Tata Consultancy Services, in his presentation described how India was emerging as an attractive destination for drug discovery and R&D.
