Fapcci moves to expand `defluoridation' scheme

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Oct. 26

THE Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Fapcci) has decided to expand the defluoridation initiative taken up by it recently to Nalgonda and Khammam districts.

Announcing this at the seminar on `Corporate Social Responsibility' here on Tuesday, Mr O.P. Goenka, President of Fapcci, said the Chamber would set up units in these two districts that were severely afflicted with fluorosis.

It is in talks with corporates and the Government to roll out the programme.

The Fapcci had recently opened a unit in a Warangal village in association with Tatas. "We need to spend Rs 4 lakh on each unit. It is no big deal considering the willingness of corporates to cooperate with us," he said.

The Governor, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, who inaugurated the seminar, asked corporates not to confine to occasional contribution to society. They must integrate their policies on social development with their core business strategies.

"Corporates houses in the West are judged and assessed by their stakeholders more by their contribution to the economic development of the community, rather than their financial successes," he said.

Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi, President of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry and India, said though social responsibility was not new to corporates in India, it was important to make it part of the vision of businesses.

"It is important to find a long-term solution to the problems, rather than taking up short-term approaches," he pointed out.
