Regulatory Bodies & Rulings TRAI orders Bharti, Idea to refund migration fee Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 26 THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has ordered Bharti Cellular and Idea Cellular to refund the migration fee collected from subscribers for moving from one plan to another. The telecom regulator has said that a one-time fee being collected by the two operators was in violation of the tariff order. While Bharti levied Rs 50 and Rs 200 from its existing pre-paid and post paid subscribers respectively, Idea Cellular collected Rs 249 for subscribers migrating from one plan to another in Gujarat. TRAI has asked the two operators to immediately stop levying the fee. Responding to TRAI's order, a Bharti statement said, "We believe that TRAI's directive does not take into account the complete facts of the present case. However, since the directive comes as a benefit to the existing Airtel customers, we have decided that while we will place the full facts in front of the TRAI, Bharti Cellular will proceed forthwith to comply with the directive of TRAI." The statement said that Airtel had introduced this scheme in a very transparent manner, including duly advertising the same in various newspapers. TRAI has sought compliance of the order within 15 days.
