Assocham moots `land banks' for hotel industry

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 1

IN a bid to create a vibrant tourism sector, the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has mooted a proposal for the creation of a chain of `land-banks' all over the country for the allocation of preferential land sites for promoters of the hotel industry at subsidised rates.

The Chamber has also called for setting up of a Tourism Development Fund to bridge the existing infrastructural gaps to enable the tourism sector to realise its potential.

In a statement, the Assocham President, Mr Mahendra K. Sanghi, said that the Finance and Urban Development Ministries should write to all the States' Tourism Development Corporations, advising them to identify sites suitable for putting up hotels and make provisions for their preferential allotment to those willing to invest in the tourism sector.

"The land, earmarked for such purpose should be distributed among the entrepreneurs at preferential rates to attract investments. This will ensure the infrastructural development of the sites, which in other case will never be developed," the release added.

Mr Sanghi also suggested that the Centre should earmark a budget for development of the preferential sites and disburse it to the suggested land banks through an appropriate mechanism.

In addition, the Chamber has suggested that the Government should accord the same fiscal benefits to the tourism sector as given to all export oriented industries.
