Coal shortage: Tile makers' body seeks Govt intervention

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 1

THE All India Brick and Tiles Manufacturers' Federation (AIBTMF), the sole brick and tiles manufacturers' federation in the country, has decided to discontinue operations unless the Government takes some action on the acute shortage of coal and use of fly ash in the manufacturing process.

The Federation has already written to the Prime Minister's Office and to the Minister for Labour, Mr Sis Ram Ola, on the problems being faced by them. According to a statement here, the brick and tile manufacturers are all set to close down their establishments if the Government does not provide any immediate relief and assistance. As the work being done by the industry is bracketed in the `non-core sector,' the manufacturers are forced to buy coal at Rs 4,500-5,000 per tonne as against the normal price of Rs 2,000-3,000 per tonne earlier, the statement has pointed out.

The closure of the industry could lead to several lakh workers being unemployed, apart from those planning to construct houses being forced to import bricks, the statement said.
