THE permanent trade fair complex coming up in Kolkata in the Salt Lake area, in the vicinity of the Science City, will be completed within the next 12 months.
Making this announcement at the inaugural session of the Consumer-2004 Fair, organised by the CII, Eastern Region on Thursday, Mr Nirupam Sen, State Minister of Commerce and Industries, said that once such a facility becomes available, fairs such as Consumer-2004 would attract much greater participation.
The trade fair complex project is being executed jointly by India Trade Promotion Organisation and the West Bengal Government on the same lines as the trade fair complex in Tamil Nadu.
Describing the Consumer-2004 fair - which has been held every year for a decade now - as a landmark event in the city, the Minister said that the increasing participation by FMCG majors in the fair over the years was a clear indication of the growing purchasing power of the people of the city.
Stating that the focus of the Government's policies was now on small and medium enterprises, which hold large employment potential, Mr Sen said that this was particularly necessary for strengthening the large industries. He said all segments of the consumer goods sector, particularly the automobiles, are represented at Consumer-2004.
Earlier, Mr B. Muthuraman, Chairman, CII, Eastern Region, said that the growing consumerism in West Bengal was a heartening sign.
