Centre to spend more on primary healthcare: Minister

EFFORTS are on to raise the public spending on primary healthcare to 2-3 per cent of the Gross Domestic Receipts, translating into an expenditure of Rs 1,12,639 crore, said Health Minister, Dr A. Ramadoss.
Speaking at the Social Editors' Conference, he said that the aim is to provide a comprehensive, preventive, promotive and curative health services to the people, especially the less privileged living in rural areas and urban slums throughout the country.
More funds would be allocated to prevent the spread of disease such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and kala azar, he said adding that the Government is committed to eliminate polio and leprosy by 2005 and 2007 respectively.
He added that the Ministry would approach the Planning Commission for starting an integrated programme for control of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and stroke. "We also propose to launch the Rs 408-crore World Bank assisted Integrated Disease Surveillance Project shortly for both communicable and non-communicable diseases."
About strengthening the surveillance system to monitor the progress and proper implementation of programmes, Dr Ramadoss said, "We will employ chartered accountants and business management people to do the job."
The Government would also accredit public and private hospitals according to the facilities and services offered by them so as to help patients make an informed choice, he added.
