COONOOR: The Hittakkal group has become the first as a group of bought leaf factories to obtain ISO certification for quality management system.

"Some four bought leaf factories have obtained ISO certification, but they are individual factories. As a group, only ours has so far been declared in respect of both our factories - Vigneshwar Estate and Hittakkal", the group's Managing Partner, Mr. M. Bhojarajan, told Business Line here on Friday.

The certification bearing standard ISO 9001: 2000 has been issued by the Dutch certifying authority, Det Norske Veritas (DNV). It covers the procurement of green tea leaves and the processing of the tea. "These indicate the quality of the raw material procured by us and the quality of the end product manufactured by us", he said.

We have also been supporting the Self Help Groups (SHG) for procuring the green leaves. We have own retail outlets to sell our teas and our packets are well received in the market", said Mr. Ramesh Bhojarajan who manages the Vigneshwar Estate Tea Factory in Aravenu off Kotagiri.

The group manufactures some two million kgs of teas annually.
