Chennai , Nov. 18

HEWLETT Packard (HP) India on Thursday launched 23 new varieties of laser printers with the product category ranging between 12 pages per minute and 55 pages per minute.

The printers have an enhanced technology and their prices have been reduced by between 8 per cent and 20 per cent. "We have made the new printers affordable for consumers," said Mr Samir Shah, Country Category Manager (Shared Printing and Connectivity), HP India.

Outlining the company's strategy for 2004-05 in India, Mr Shah said the company plans to move "aggressively" into class C and D cities and expand its reach by actively engaging retail channel partners. Quoting Internet Data Corporation (IDC), a research firm, Mr Shah said that 68 per cent of the printers sold in the country are in the top eight cities. There are a lot of opportunities to reach consumers in the C and D cities, he told newspersons. HP will leverage its network base of 2,500 managed channel partners, 24-hour customer support and service centres and a 24-hour toll-free helpline service to ensure a nationwide reach of HP products and customer service facilities, he said.

Quoting IDC again, Mr Shah said HP maintained its number one position in the laser printer space since 1984 and currently commands 74 per cent of the Indian printer market. In 2003, 160,000 laser printers were sold in India, and in the first two quarters (June and September) of the current fiscal, the growth has been 58 per cent, he said. The value of laser printers sold in the 2003 fiscal was Rs 350 crore, he said.
