Schenker sprucing up India operations

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 1

GLOBAL logistics major Schenker is sprucing up its India operations, riding on a growth path that has seen the company double its turnover from $18 million in 2002 to approximately $32 million during January-September this year. The turnover for the whole year is expected to touch $40 million.

As part of this initiative, Schenker has opened a new corporate office at Kapashera near IGI airport in Delhi.

Schenker is a subsidiary of Stinnes AG, the transport and logistics management company of Deutsche Bahn AG (German Railways).

The office was inaugurated by Mr Karl Heinz Matthes, Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific, Schenker, in the presence of Mr Heimo Richter, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Matthes said Schenker anticipates a growth of 25-30 per cent in air and sea freight in India during 2005. "This is a fair target we can reach. India is a country of opportunity not only for the IT sector but also for the manufacturing sector. We are not only expanding locations/network, but also our portfolio," he noted.

According to Mr Christian Nebel, Managing Director, Schenker India Pvt Ltd, the company plans to open offices in 3-4 new locations during 2005 that will add to the 12 already operating. By 2006, the company plans to increase its workforce to 350-400 employees from the existing 250.

Mr Matthes said that Schenker will launch new products for the Indian market that is industry-specific. This will cover the automotive market, electronics and hi-tech industry, particularly semi-conductor.

"With the lifting of the textiles quota by the US in line with the WTO framework, the textile market in India will experience a huge growth. We are particularly active in this field and this would remain one of our main focus areas in the coming days as well," Mr Nebel stated, adding that pharmaceuticals and chemicals were the other priority areas for the company.

Schenker has also identified infrastructure projects as a potential area for future growth. To cater to this requirement, it has set up a specialised project services group within its fold, which was awarded the contract for importing/transporting rail coaches from Korea for Delhi Metro.

The company also has exclusive departments to handle marine, aero and auto parts, Government cargo, fairs and exhibitions as well as warehousing.
