Human Resources Reuters to strengthen Bangalore operations K. Giriprakash
Bangalore , Dec. 22 GLOBAL information company Reuters plans to strengthen its operations in Bangalore through recruitment of more journalists and carrying out more editorial activities over the next six months. "We are locating a number of important editorial activities to this (Bangalore) team over the next six months," a Reuters spokesperson told Business Line. The spokesperson said that Reuters had earlier announced that 20 journalists would be recruited in Bangalore. It now expects to have around 40 journalists in place by the middle of 2005. "We remain committed to doing the editorial reference desk work, other editorial activities and enhancing our data operations in Bangalore," the spokesperson said. He said the number of staffers for the company's data operations is expected to grow to 400 by the end of the year. It currently has over 300 staffers in the data operations' services. "We have always made it clear that we are piloting and testing how this works in order to ensure the best quality," the spokesperson said. Around 200 of these roles have been migrated from other centres and remainder are new positions. The Bangalore centre is one of the four key locations around the world providing data and information to Reuters products for professionals in the financial services, media and corporate markets. The Bangalore centre covers a range of data work, including company information, fixed income, historical terms and conditions, new debt issues, new transaction information and real-time and historical pricing. The other centres are located in the UK, New York and Singapore. Early next year, Reuters will also create a finance business service operation within the Bangalore facility. This will form part of Reuters existing finance division and will support location and time zone independent transaction processing. This will include general accounting services and cash application. A spokesperson had earlier said Reuters will shift 150 jobs from its US and UK operations, but it will not necessarily lead to loss of jobs elsewhere. Bangalore was picked ahead of 14 other cities in India to locate Reuters operations because it offers high quality, broad labour pool and strong political support, the spokesperson said.
