Climate & Weather Accurate weather forecast vital for agriculture: Expert Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Dec 23 ACCURATE monsoon forecasting is critical to the economic development of the country, as it is mainly dependent on agriculture, and the academics should strive to give oceanographic studies such an orientation, Dr Harsh K. Gupta, the Secretary, the Union Department of Ocean Development, has said. He was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of a two-day national seminar on oceanographic studies, which began in the Andhra University on Thursday. Dr Gupta said plenty of oceanographic data was available but it had to be used purposively by the academics to develop accurate models of monsoon forecasting. He lauded the role of the university in promoting oceanographic studies which were first initiated here by the late French professor, La Fond, more than 50 years ago. He said the late professor's pioneering contribution to the field was invaluable, more so as the present day technological tools were not available to him then. Referring to the theme of the seminar, Prof Y.C. Simhadri, the Vice-Chancellor, said the North Indian Ocean region was unique due to seasonally reversing monsoons and transient cyclonic storms. Strong ocean current with seasonal reversal were typical of the region. With the advent of remote sensing satellites and high-speed computers, rapid strides had been made in the discipline, he added. Prof Ramana Murty, the convener of the seminar, recounted the achievements of the late professor, La Fond, who first visited the university in the fifties and launched the oceanographic studies in the country. "In reverence to the late professor, widely regarded as the father of oceanography in the country, the seminar is being named after him," he said.
