TiE Global ready to support IT development in Bengal

Kolkata , Dec. 24

TIE Global has pledged its support for the development of the IT sector in West Bengal.

At a panel discussion called `Riding the Upswing', organised on Thursday by TiE Kolkata, visiting members of TiE Global city praised the efforts of the West Bengal Government in successfully positioning the State as an ideal destination for IT companies.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gururaj Deshpande, Chairman of the board of trustees of TiE Global, said: "The whole of the US thinks that all the action is in India."

For India in general, and West Bengal in particular, the BPO boom is not the only opportunity.

"It is just the beginning. In the days ahead, opportunities will come up in areas such as pharmaceuticals, auto parts and food processing. There will be huge opportunities to participate in and access global markets."

Mr Deshpande said that TiE would be too happy to mentor companies and offer its forum to companies here for networking with their counterparts elsewhere.

Mr Sridar Iyengar, President of TiE Silicon Valley, said that the image of Kolkata has changed and it has emerged as a destination for IT companies.

He added that TiE was willing to assist the State Government in the creation of a resource pool that would be required by the growing IT sector here.

The Executive Director of TiE Silicon Valley, Mr Raj Desai, said that TiE was focused on facilitating global connectivity "so that people can make a connection without having to make a trip".

Towards this end, an online system that would facilitate such connectivity would be put in place within the next 12 months, he said.

Mr Ashok Soota, Chairman and Managing Director of Mindtree Consulting, said that the West Bengal Government must leverage on the "look East movement" and take the lead in the development of the region as a whole.

For this to materialise, however, it would be important to ensure better connectivity between Kolkata and other parts of the world.

A higher dose of venture funding, too, would help in the development of the IT sector in the State and the region, he said.
