Rs 19-cr Nabard package for pokkali paddy cultivation

NABARD has announced a financial package of Rs 19.15 crore for Ernakulam district as part of revitalising pokkali paddy cultivation in the district.

Pokkali paddy, which is being cultivated in 18 panchayats and seven block panchayats in an area of 4,000 hectares in the district, is grown in strict eco-friendly conditions. The land will be used for paddy cultivation for a six-month period and for prawn farming for the subsequent six months . Nabard is providing financial assistance for the promotion and sustenance of Pokkali farms with special emphasis on paddy cultivation. Major works that are to be undertaken under the package are construction of outer bunds to prevent flow of saline water into the farms and setting up of sluices and mounds at appropriate places aimed at better irrigation.
