Letters Warning systems
This refers to the article, "Geophysicists body to discuss seismicity" (Business Line, December 28). It is unfortunate that modern technology had not been able to predict the earthquake-genic tsunamis that devastated South Asia. Since it was earthquake-genic tsunamis, seismic waves as well as the tsunami waves would have originated simultaneously at the epicentre. Given the fact that the seismic waves have an average velocity of about 30,000 Km per hour and the velocity of the tsunami waves are much lower about 400-600 Km per hour the advent of the tsunamis waves could have been predicted at least an hour before their arrival. But it is unfortunate that this was not done. It is necessary that India should, without delay, join the global tsunami warning system. This will help to manage similar crisis in the future.
