Politicians, keep off!

On the first anniversary of 9/11, several advertisers in the US voluntarily agreed not to take commercial advantage while telecasting the solemn ceremonies connected with the tragedy.

Likewise, it would be worthwhile for the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to constitute a national-level committee at the Centre and a State-level committee which, in mutual consultation, can channel the global efforts to render speedy succour to the affected.

The committee must ideally include members from the Opposition, both at the Centre and the State.

Further, repeated visits to the various sites of the tragedy by members of different political parties simultaneously will not only hamper the relief operations that are in progress, but also jeopardise efforts, drawing as they do the ground-level workers from relief work to party work.
