Sheet rubber up a tad on new buys

Our Correspondent

Kottayam , Dec. 30

SPOT rubber prices were mixed on Thursday. Covering purchases were noticed in sheet rubber which improved to Rs 54.25 from Rs 54 a kg.

Rumours on a possible delay in rubber imports as a result of the tsunami disaster has triggered a fresh buying interest in the main marketing centres, sources said.

Rubber futures continued to show an almost steady trend quoting the January delivery at Rs 54.90 (Rs 54.77), February delivery at Rs 56.05 (Rs 55.93), March delivery at Rs 57.20 (Rs 57.02) and April delivery at Rs 58.39 (Rs 57.28) per kg for RSS 4.

The closure of leading Japanese markets on account of year-end holidays kept most of the market participants on the sidelines. As traders usually take signals from Japanese rubber futures, the holidays in Japan have dampened their trading interest.

At Bangkok, RSS 3 was steady at Rs 51.97 a kg.

The physical rubber rates (per kg) on Thursday are as follows: RSS 4 Rs 54.25 (Rs 54); RSS 5 Rs 52.50 (Rs 52.50); Ungraded Rs 50.50 (Rs 50.25); ISNR 20 Rs 52.25 (Rs 52.25) and Latex 60 per cent Rs 41.50 (Rs 41.50).
