Jaggery prices up on festive demand

Dhimant Bhatt

Mumbai , Jan. 4

PRICES of gur or jaggery (yellow quality) have increased by Rs 100-125 per quintal in the past two weeks, mainly on strong festival demand and reduced inflows from producing centres.

Prices at the Vashi wholesale market are currently ruling at Rs 1,700-2,100 per 100 kg.

"Gur prices have also increased at the time when sugar prices are on rise. Festival demand for gur is strong all over the country. The main season for gur is January," a local trader said.

"Normally gur commands a premium of Rs 2 per kg over sugar but because of sharp spurt in sugar prices, both the commodity are now at a par. In Mumbai, retail price of these commodities are ruling at Rs 21-22 per kg," he said.

"Gur demand will continue till January 14-15, thanks to Makara Sankranti (Northern and Western region) and Pongal (Tamil Nadu) festival," the trader said.

Average daily inflows, mainly from Karad, Kolhapur Sangli and Pune, were around 10 truckloads (one truck equals 10 tonnes) last week.

"Traders' strike at Vashi market may affect fresh inflows this week but ready stock with traders is enough to cater the current festival demand," Mr Dipak Shah, President of the Bombay Gur Merchants' Association, told Business Line.

Traders at the Vashi wholesale markets are on strike from January 1 due to payment burden of 10.2 per cent service tax being shifted from transport operators to consignee (traders), sources said.
