THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Tuesday announced a massive housing programme for the urban poor, regularisation of encroachments and provision of water connections at reduced charges.

Addressing a conference of District Collectors and Municipal Commissioners, the Chief Minister said that 15 lakh houses would be constructed in the urban areas during the next five years.

In addition to the regular housing programme, one lakh houses will be built in the Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts with 90 per cent loan assistance from banks.

Dr Reddy said that the Government has also brought down the charges for giving water supply connections from Rs 5,000 to Rs 2,000.

The two-day conference assumed added importance in the light of the forthcoming elections in 109 municipalities in the State.

The Municipal Administration Minister, Mr K. Ranga Rao, said that the World Bank was prepared to provide Rs 1,200 crore for improving urban infrastructure in the State.

The Chief Secretary, Mr Mohan Kanda, suggested instituting an annual prize for best practices to promote healthy competition among municipalities.
