`Reassertion of regional parties cause for joy'

NOBEL laureate Professor Amartya Sen has said the reassertion of regional parties was not to be bemoaned but it is a reason for celebration as it demonstrated the inherent strength of the country's democratic traditions.
In a dialogue on development and nationhood, at the conclusion of the two-day seminar organised by FICCI and the Shri Ram Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources on Tuesday, Prof. Sen traced the low growth rate of the Indian economy in the first 30 years since Independence to the indifferent economic policy and trade initiatives.
He disagreed with Lord Meghnad Desai that the direct outcome of the country's `multi-national' polity was that it pandered to regional and sectional interests.
"The connection of growth with the `multi-national' theory advanced by Lord Desai is totally misplaced," he said.
"My difficulty is with economic stagnation that encourages `multi-national' regional forces that drive politics in a redistributive framework than pursuing a growth agenda," Lord Desai said and added, "The question that needs to be addressed is what can one do about the politics of the Indian system that ignores poverty reduction or why has India not done much in the 30 years since Independence to address growth and poverty issues?"
