Livestock programme in Perambalur dist

MADURAI: An exclusive programme to increase high breed livestock population through artificial insemination is under implementation in Perambalur district.

According to the District Collector, Mr D. Vivekanandan, the Veterinary department has fixed a target of 19,000 high breed heifer calves through 1.02 lakh artificial insemination during the current financial year and 79,000 inseminations so far, has been administered.

A survey of livestocks in the district had revealed that the livestocks were often affected by diseases such as ovarian cyst, nitritis and under-developed genetalia, which in turn, affected the reproductive capacity of cows and buffaloes, he said while inaugurating a special camp for improving reproductive efficiency of livestocks at Chettikulam in the district.

So far, 95 camps had been conducted for the purpose in the district during the year against a target of 120 camps, the sources added.
