Research & Development `Researches should be done in Indian context' Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 17 RESEARCH work in the country should be done in the Indian context and after studying the sentiments. It should also try to address and solve the problems faced by Indians, said Prof. Krishna Palepu, Senior Associate Dean and Director of Research, Harvard Business School, while participating in a round table discussion organised by ITC on the theme, `Strengthening the industry-academia partnership to build business leaders for the nation'. The discussion was a part of the finals of the business plan - called Mera Goan Mera Desh - contest organised by ITC. According to Prof. Palepu, there are two types of research work. The firstonefocuses on the development of the livelihood of mankind. The second type tries to address individual issues and problems. He felt that there were many research scientists all over the world ready to work on the first type. However, for the second type, there has to be a specific set of people. His thesis was that only Indian research workers could sort out problems pertinent to India. In this context, he urged business leaders to development leadership skills among the lower and middle-level management because they were going to run the show in future. Mr K. Apte, Director of IIM, Bangalore, said that executives in the corporate world, who were had an academic bent of mind, should be given the opportunity to teach. This would give students a view of both the worlds. He felt that corporate houses were not disclosing enough data to academicians. He urged research workers to focus on contemporary issues. Mr Y.C. Deveshwar, Chairman of ITC, said there was a need for integration of knowledge available to business schools and at business houses. He too felt that pertinent research work was not taking place in India. He asked leaders of corporate houses to think on a long-term social perspective before making fresh investments.
