Guntur , Jan. 18

TOBACCO auctions will begin from Wednesday in Andhra Pradesh in a phased manner, according to the Chairman of the Tobacco Board, Dr P. Dayachari.

The farmers expect a good price at the beginning going by the prevailing average price in Karnataka auctions.

Dr Dayachari said here on Tuesday that four floors in Prakasam district (two at Podili and two more at Kandukuru) besides Kaligiri and D.C. Palli in Nellore district would be opened on Wednesday for the farmers in the Southern Light Soils (SLS).

The total authorised and registered crop for the SLS was 36.7 million kg out of the total of 111 million kg. for the entire State.

The auctions in Karnataka have gained momentum after a lull and the average price is at present Rs 47.95 per kg. Tobacco farmers in the SLS are in an upbeat mood as the prices in the Karnataka market are good. The manufacturers use the bulk of the SLS crop for blending with Karnataka crop in the cigarettes.

The Vellampalli, Medermetla, Ongole-I and II, Tangutur, Kondepi, Devarapalli, J.R. Gudem-I and II and Koyyalagudem platforms will be opened on February 18. Auctions will begin on the remaining floors on March 28.
