Storage Karnataka cold storage owners for subsidy on power Our Bureau
Mangalore , Jan. 19 THE Karnataka Coastal Ice Plant and Cold Storage Owners' Association has urged the State Government to provide Re 1 subsidy for every unit of power utilised by ice-manufacturing units. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, the President of the association, Mr U. Balachandra, said that ice-manufacturing units are essential for the fisheries sector in the coastal region. But these units have become unviable because of the increase in the production cost. Of the nearly 150 ice-manufacturing units in the coastal region, at least 25 are closing down every year. He attributed the lack of government support for the closure. In 2001, a group of ministers had favoured extending Re 1 subsidy for every unit of power utilised by ice-manufacturing units. However, this suggestion did not materialise. He demanded that the Government exempt ice-manufacturing units from sales tax and waive interest on their loans. The members of the association, who met in Mangalore on January 15, have decided to resort to indefinite strike, if the Government fails to meet their demands, he added.
