NEW-YORK headquartered Sutherland Global Services on Thursday said it had more than quadrupled its employee base in India over the last 15 months, as part of its aggressive growth plans for 2005.

The company hopes to achieve revenues of $200 million from its India operations in calendar year 2005, according to a senior official with Sutherland.

Of the company's global employee base of 10,000, India now has 7,000 employees, from 1,500 in September 2003 — one of the fastest BPO ramp-ups in India. The company will hire an additional 4,000 professionals in India in 2005.

The company has onshore delivery facilities in the US and near shore facilities in Canada, in addition to its significant offshore presence in Chennai and Mumbai.

Over the last two years, India has contributed significantly to the growth of Sutherland, said Mr Dilip R Vellodi, Chairman & CEO of the company. "The smooth transition of some US-based clients to the blended delivery model, that is, leveraging US, Canadian and Indian resources has been the prime reason for our rapid growth in 2004. This has been supplemented through the growth of existing relationships and the acquisition of new marquee clients."

The rapid Indian ramp has been a result of the addition of a number of new clients and significant expansion of existing contracts, he said.

Sutherland established its first offshore presence in Chennai in 2002.Within 12 months, the company has grown to 1,500 employees in Mumbai and has doubled its infrastructure at its BPO delivery facility in Malad. Additionally, Sutherland has raised its headcount in Chennai to 5,500 people across three facilities there.
