Spinners' plea to sort out conversion charges issue

THE South India Small Spinners Association (Sisspa) here has asked both powerloom weavers and textile trade engaging the former for conversion job in the district to sort out the conversion charges tangle at the earliest.
The association, concerned over the disruption caused in the yarn market due to unrest in powerloom clusters, has said that if the issue prolonged, it would seriously affect the spinning industries that supply yarn, the Sisspa President, Mr R. Chinnaiyan, said in a statement.
Sisspa said the spinning mills were unable to clear yarn stocks for the past one week in the wake of the stoppage of work by the job-working powerloom owners. Considering its long-term implications, efforts are being taken by the powerloom weavers and textile producers in the region to end the stalemate.
In the meantime, the job-working powerloom owners, who control an estimated one lakh powerlooms in Palladam, Avanashi, Somanur and Thekkalur clusters, continued to desist from accepting any work orders from textile traders. The jobbers have also threatened to intensify the agitation According to Mr A.P. Velusamy, President of Mangalam Job-work Powerloom Owners Association, the demand for a 70 per cent hike in conversion charges is inevitable in the light of increased overheads and wages for loom operators.
The jobbers had already had two rounds of informal discussions initiated at the behest of a State minister hailing from Palladam area. If no solution thing emerges by Saturday , the job-work loom owners would intensify the agitation, he added.
