Bank credit up Rs 10,228 cr

GROSS bank credit in the system jumped by Rs 10,228 crore to Rs 10,37,234 crore for the fortnight ended January 7, as per the latest RBI statistics.

This was inclusive of food credit, which increased by Rs 1,280 crore and non-food credit, which grew by Rs 8,946 crore, according to the weekly statistical supplement of the RBI.

Total accommodation provided by scheduled commercial banks to the commercial sector in the form of bank credit and investments in shares, debentures, bonds and commercial paper, etc., grew by Rs 1,89,384 crore to touch Rs 10,83,507 crore, during the fortnight.

Aggregate deposits of scheduled commercial banks shot up by Rs 33,158 crore to Rs 16,55,738 crore.

Loans and advances provided by the RBI to the State Governments increased by Rs 189 crore to touch Rs 1,651 crore for the week-ended January 14.

Year-on-year money supply was at 13.4 per cent.
