Social Welfare AP to expand land distribution project Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 23 THE State Government, which is in the process of fine-tuning its land distribution project and gearing up for its launch, now plans to further extend it to other sections of society, including the tribal lands. Reviewing the arrangements for the distribution of one lakh acres of land to the landless poor which is fit for cultivation, the State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy, said this is only the beginning of this ambitious project, and directed officials to take up similar exercise regarding the tribal lands. This would be taken up by expediting court cases while identifying lands for tribals in the State as part of the second phase programme. In view of the Government commitment to distribute land to the landless poor, the administration has identified about 1.5 lakh acres of land in various parts of the State as opposed to the initial target of one lakh acres proposed to be distributed on the Republic Day under Indira Prabha scheme. According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, preparatory work of sub-division of land wherever necessary, approval of the assignment committee for the proposed assignment were completed. It is proposed to cover about 50 per cent with SC and ST beneficiaries. According to Special Chief Secretary, Mr T.K. Diwan, the pattadar passbooks, laminated title deeds, rough sketch of the land and sanction letter of financial assistance for development of the land assigned would be handed over to the beneficiaries along with the deed. This land project, Indira Prabha, would be covered under the Velugu project and schemes from other corporations of SCs and BCs were also being worked out. Besides teams of agriculture, horticulture, sericulture officials were formed to assess suitability of lands being assigned to tie up financial assistance under different schemes with the department concerned. The Government has set apart 1,55,843 acres of land to be handed over to 1,07,217 beneficiaries. Of them, 34,284 were SCs, 25,939 STs, 33,335 BCs, 1,241 minorities and 12,417 others. Of these SCs and STs constitute about 56 per cent. The Chief Minister stated that Rs 500 crore was earmarked for development of assigned lands and of this about Rs 200 crore was sanctioned under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF)-IX project and the rest has been proposed to the Nabard RIDF-X project.
