Life Insurance Industry & Economy - Natural Calamities LIC South zone settles 268 tsunami claims Our Bureau
Chennai , Jan. 26 FOLLOWING the tsunami that struck the east coast in December 26, 2004, the Life Insurance Corporation of India's south zone offices that include Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Pondicherry settled 268 claims amounting to Rs 2.38 crore, according to the south zone's regional manager, Mr R.R. Nair. Except for a handful of claims, these represent the total claims on LIC following the tsunami. The largest number of claims was from Thanjavur division, which includes Nagapattinam the worst affected, where claims estimated at Rs 1.70 crore were settled. They are expecting claims through the group schemes from Pondicherry where a large number of households are insured. Mr Nair said the numbers are not large as the zone is normally faced with 50,000 death claims a year.
