THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be joining the one-day Bharat bandh called for, on February 1, to protest the shifting of service tax liability on traders.

In a statement here, the Chamber President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, has said that instead of bringing hundred-and-odd lorry-booking agents under the proposed service tax net, effective from January 1, the Government has shifted the liability on traders.

While one can bear the burden, the liability of registration with the Excise Department, collection and remittance of the service tax levied cannot be undertaken, which must be borne only by the service providers.

When the Union Finance Minister levied the tax earlier on lorry-booking agents, they resorted to a countrywide agitation and brought the movement of goods by road to a standstill, he pointed out.
