Info-Tech - E-Governance

`Make info accessible to the public'

Ambar Singh Roy

Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy

Bhubaneswar , Feb. 3

THE Chief Mentor of Infosys Ltd, Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, has said that appropriate implementation of e-Governance initiatives in India would go a long way in ensuring transparency and accountability, "the two attributes of good governance".

Speaking at the 8th National Conference on e-Governance 2005 here today, Mr Murthy said e-Governance was a good way of interaction between citizens and the government ,especially in a country such as India "where there is poverty, distances are remote and the ability to access services by citizens is not very well developed".

He cited examples where e-Governance had helped the common man and urged the gathering to think of "how we can use technology to bring comfort and joy to the common man".

He said a work flow chart made available on the Internet could enable any member of the public to get to know where a particular file was and the bosses to know why the delays happened.

Mr Narayana Murthy said that with STD facilities and Internet kiosks spread across the country, it was a fit case of putting out information on the worldwide Web for access by the public.

"All this is, however, possible if the people want to use it. Any system is as good or as bad as the people who use it," he said.
