IVOPA hails easing of minimum carotenoid limit on crude palm oil

New Delhi , Feb. 6

THE Indian Vegetable Oil Processors' Association (IVOPA) has welcomed the Finance Ministry's decision to relax the minimum total carotenoid specification in imported crude palm oil from 500 mg/kg to 250 mg/kg for it to attract 65 per cent basic customs duty, against 75 per cent on refined oil.

"The minimum 500 mg/kg carotenoid limit was prescribed in August 2003 based on international CODEX standards, but did not take into account the fact that carotene is a labile (unstable) substance and its levels come down significantly during storage at high temperatures during voyage from Indonesia or Malaysia to Indian ports. The new minimum limit of 250 mg/kg is reasonable," said Mr D.N. Pathak, Executive Director, IVOPA.

The IVOPA also welcomed the simultaneous decision to impose an actual user condition for availing the concessional duty of 65 per cent on crude palm oil, subject to the consignment meeting the new minimum carotenoid specification of 250 mg/kg.
