Pune , Feb. 6

QUALCOMM is setting up a laboratory for software development here.

Qualcomm is a US-based player in digital wireless telephony, mobile satellite communications and Internet software.

Talking to presspersons, Dr Irwin Mark Jacobs, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Qualcomm, said the lab would showcase its technologies and also train personnel in wireless technology. The investment will be close to about $0.5 million

and will mainly cater to software development.

The company recently opened centres in Hyderabad (hardware development) and Bangalore (software operations).

Dr Jacobs said there was a shortage of trained personnel in software development, which he hoped would be filled up by iSquareIT.He said the focus in India would be on furthering research and development of chips. It is also working on service offerings with operators.

Qualcomm is in talks with content providers for allowing customers to watch movie clips and other entertainment features on their cell phones.

Dr Jacobs said the next generation technology would let mobile handsets share a common platform with of both CDMA and GSM technologies. These will be incorporated into the chips that the company is developing. Dr Jacobs said Qualcomm, as an entity, had met the Telecom Ministry officials to discuss this. spectrum allocation which was a costly affair and every nation should have a long-term view on this.

When asked whether the company plans to bring its entire R&D facilities to the country, Dr Jacobs said the US was a growing market and that there were no such immediate plans. He added that there was shortage of trained personnel in this field, which India could provide.
