Farm credit BoI helps farmers spot income avenues L.N. Revathy
Coimbatore , Feb. 7 APART from the distribution of kisan credit card, Bank of India is also in the process of identifying potential income-generating avenues for the farmer, area-wise. The bank's Executive Director, Mr N. Balachandran, said this exercise was aimed at ensuring that every eligible person in the neighbourhood benefits by the bank's presence in that area. Speaking to Business Line, he said the credit support was being extended to tenant farmers as well. "We identify those who have not availed of institutional credit and assess their limit for extending support. This exercise has helped up reach the saturation point in several lead districts in Orissa. We are replicating this in other districts." The bank has issued 6.5 lakh kisan credit cards so far, of which 1.33 lakh cards have been issued during the current year. More than 50 per cent of the cards have been issued to small farmers. Apart from farm credit, the bank, Mr Balachandran said, extended home loans to agriculturists up to a maximum of Rs 50,000, without mortgage. "We are also co-ordinating with the Small Farmers' Agri-Business Consortium by helping them generate rural employment and enabling them to move up the value chain," he said. The committee is now exploring the prospects of a co-ordinated group to take advantage of rural industrialisation.
