Tuticorin port mulls handling large container vessels

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Feb. 14

THE Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT) is planning to handle larger container vessels.

According to the TPT Chairman, Mr N.K. Raghupathy, a detailed project report is to be prepared on deepening the draft at the harbour basin to a depth of 12.8 metres.

A report on this would be submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport, Shipping and Highways, before March 31.

It would also contain a proposal on the construction of berth No. 9. The tender documents on the plans to convert berth No. 8 into a container berth would be placed for approval before the board of trustees before February 19. The conversion, however, would be effected only after berth No. 9 becoming available to handle general cargo.

He further said that the Central Government has accepted the proposal to develop the outer harbour facilities at a project cost of Rs 2,150 crore, including a draft of 14-16 metres for container and bulk cargo handling.

Proximity to international sea route emergence as a container handling port and connectivity to national and international container handling ports have helped TPT to gain strength as a transhipment port, he added.
