HDR trend

According to the Human Development Report 2004 (HDR 2004), India ranks 127 among 177 nations of the world. Norway tops the list with per capita gross domestic product 14 times that of India. This is sad, to say the least, when our financial wizards say that the GDP is increasing, and exports are growing and that India will be a great economic power by 2020.

From the HDR trend year after year, it is evident that the rich countries are becoming richer and the poor poorer. As a corollary again, the rich in poor countries are becoming richer and the poor are becoming miserable.

Overall, the rich countries exploit the poor countries and again the rich in poor countries exploit the poor. It is hoped the Finance Minister will ponder over the facts before presenting the 2005 Budget.

V. S. Venkatavaradan,
